When your involvement in charitable acts is for ego-dominant reasons, you miss out on what matters. It is a difference when acting because there is a calling to be of service or when participating in a service to receive accolades, praise, or to impress others. Impressing others is done when it is essential to keep track of and include “the good” you have done to feel included, superior, or to remain relevant. When the ego is in the driving seat, it may be time to rethink your endeavors. Sure, feeling as if you have contributed or helped in some way can be satisfying, feel rewarding, and is not required to be a secret. You can feel a sense of pride and share this with others, which may be encouraged you to give back in their way to others. However, do not misuse charity to feed your ego or “fit in.” Engage, give back, be of service, and help from the heart.
